Biography
Colin Y. Mackenzie (1875-1964)
Introduction to Political Science
Colin Young Mackenzie was born in Argyll, Scotland, 1875, to parents William Mackenzie (age 26) and Annie Mackenzie (previously Young) who was 21 by this point. In 1907, he immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg at the age of 32.
While in Manitoba, he worked for various law firms; he articled in law to Fisher and Wilson, and Stewart Murray Battram. By 1911, he was called to the bar. He practised in Winnipeg for a time, after which he moved to Brandon and practised with the law firm Coldwell and Curran. Two years later, he moved again to Boissevain and worked as a solicitor for the Dominion Bank for Boissevain, and later for the Rural Municipality of Morton.
Colin was an active member of the community, being part of the Manitoba Bar Association, the Liberal Party, and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
A year before he moved to Boissevain, he married Alice Sarah Ellerton (born 1876), returning to Winnipeg to give birth to their daughter, Margaret Mackenzie in 1917.
On the 20th of January, 1964, Colin Mackenzie passed away in the Brandon General Hospital. His body was buried in the Boissevain and Morton Cemetery. His wife, Alice, died seven years earlier. Though the year is not known, Margaret Mackenzie is also confirmed dead.
